Smart move, Zigs! What a lovely family! Oh, I don't know. Family resemblance can fool anybody. Our youngest looked exactly like her grandmother at the age of 10. They could have been twins. Two of my nieces are full sisters but you can't tell they're sisters by looks. One looks like her father, the other one like her great-grandmother. Totally different colours. I do genealogy and took a gene test on Familyfinder. One of my cousins could genetically be my half-brother. Three of us cousins look like siblings. My sister discovered we had the same father because she also started genealogy and took a test. I really hope she'll make contact soon. One of her sons took a test too. He shows up as my nephew so there isn't much doubt about the relationship anymore.
Cor, interesting stuff Droopy My new Brother looks like the Brother I grew up with, only older I once joined a scientific forum using my full name, I got a pm from someone with the same surname who lives in New Zealand. We have a common ancestor who lived in Salisbury in the 1800's. I've visited the grave of this ancestor as I was working on a church in the next village. He also worked on churches and had the same name as my Dad. The chap in New Zealand said he could trace his family back to Salisbury and they even had a note of the name of the ship they emigrated on. When we swapped photos you could see the family resemblance. There's still a farm near Salisbury named after my family and I've always felt at home in Salisbury. I ended up living there when I was working nearby and my Daughter moved there as few miles from the farm. Small world
It is a small world. I was on Kodiak Island, AK working on a Coast Guard construction site and the supervisor's mother wanted to see me. Turns out she was my sitter in Samson, AL when I was very new. There we were, 5,000 miles or so from home. I found out my step brother existed not that many years ago now. He still lives in AK and is a trained Hydrologist, traveling to work for governments in various countries.
Wow, @Zigs, one should think church stuff run in your family genes. That was a fun and interesting read. @Dirtmechanic, imagine finding your sitter just like that! Small world indeed. My ancestors on my mother's side moved up and down the coast of Norway and made their living off the sea. They've done so for centuries. I know because there was some nobility way back when, and there are records of their doings. To be honest some of them made their living off the backs of other hard-working people. Nobility did that sort of thing. The ones on my father's side tended to stay inland and were mostly farmers, with a bit of nobility way back for good measure. I lucked out in that branch too, historical records-wise. So here I am, stuck by the sea because I can't let go of it, but very dependant on working in the dirt and grow stuff during that season to keep my sanity. (@Sjoerd , don't go there!) A nice blend of both sides methinks.
Small world indeed Mr Mechanic I took to church work like the Norwegian Blue took to the Fijords There is a village called Beer on the Devon coast where each family farmed a strip of land on the cliffs and fished the sea with boats launched from the beach. That would suit your genes
I converted this from an old slide. Us short people thought we were all cousins, in reality the little ginger kid is the uncle of the girl and the boy to the west of him, the actual cousin to the east is now shorter than him "Uncle" Les was actually my brother in law
I'm not too fond of beer. Even if it's lovely there living in it would probably be untolerable. Where I grew up most people had either a farm or a smallholding with animals, potato plots, berry bushes, and a vegetable garden. Many also worked the sea. My great-grandfather and grandfather had their own fishing boat. They fished around Iceland, along the coast of Norway, and down to Shetland. My grandmother tended the small farm while the men were away. My mother told some stories from her childhood. Growing up was probably easier way back then. Life was less complicated and probably a lot healthier. I miss the island life I remember from my own childhood. We moved to the mainland when I was eight. I wanted to bring my great-grandfather but they wouldn't let me no matter how much I cried. And talking about new family: One of my classmates from that island was my cousin, and neither of us knew until a few years later. My mother's youngest brother had been a naughty boy!
How interesting! My older cousin died in her 50s, of thyroid cancer. She had never married, and was an only child. There were occasions in her teenage years when she was disappeared for a few months to another town, then returned. I always wondered if a child, or children, resulted. That was one reason I joined a DNA website. I wondered if there were unknown relatives. She was probably autistic, which runs in the family, as well as cancer. She had undergone thyroid irradiation to treat her behavioral challenges, which probably caused the cancer. Never did find any lost relatives.
