My Haskap bushes are in their third year of production. They definitely enjoyed the cool wet spring. The berries were huge and plentiful. I have three varieties. Boreal Beast, , Beauty and Blizzard. I harvest the two Boreal Beauty bushes. They need cross pollination from certain other varieties to do their best. Although the bushes are only about 24 inches high, they had a huge harvest. They make wonderful pancakes, muffins, smoothies and the jam is splendid. They have so much juice and no seeds. And taste much like a mix between a blueberry and raspberry. The Haskap patch is in the middle at the back. Deer and birds love the berries so it must be protected until they are all harvested. ( The blueberries are to the right and are in front of the lower vegetable, asparagus and raspberry garden) The unveiling/unravelling of protective layers showed these little gems. All tucked away in the freezer to enjoy this winter.
Mel— that is an interesting one. You have a good harvest there. Does freezing them change their structure?
They freeze very similar to a blueberry, although their skin is not quite as thick. And they are juicier once thawed. I still use them in pancakes once frozen. That's exciting Zigs! I hope it does well for you!
