Anniekay ….Glad you were safe from Hurricane Andrew. These hurricanes sound like a freight train when they pass overhead. Experienced one many years ago visiting family in Orlando. :setf_050:
My fingers are crossed to ..:fingerscrossed: and hope no damage is reported to any state or country in its path.

Most of the models I have seen on the weather channel shows hurricane Erin missing the eastern states. Sad and horrible news for the Caribbean. It’s hurricane season and Erin is a whopper. Prayers for those in the path of Erin.

It's been cooler here the last two mornings. 73°f but, still up into the low 90's in the afternoon.

@Jersey Devil I didn't get damage in Ft. Lauderdale but the neighbor's carpot came off and wrapped itself around the front of my doublewide !!
I evacuated the doublewide and went 8 miles inland for the storm to a friend's stick- built house. There was damage there in that neighborhood. The roof almost came off. We could see it moving and the creaking was very loud. Their sliding patio doors were boarded up but they shook back and forth as if someone had hold of them and was trying to shake them loose from the frame. The guys took the wooden headboard of a bed and braced it against the front door and the staircase, which was directly in front of the door, to keep it from coming off the hinges. It was bowing and you could hear the frame creaking and water was coming in.

Hurricanes are nothing to fool with !!

Ft. Lauderdale was 60 miles north of the center of the storm and we still got 100 mph winds, gusts to 120. It was an enormously large storm.

Annie, I remember Hurricane Andrew. It devastated Homestead I think. I recall it being a top 5 storm in my lifetime.

Actually, we don't have any birds heading south here at all. Where are you experiencing that? How much furthur south can birds go from where you are ? :). But everything I have seen so far predicts we are going to have a doozy of a winter here. I kinda hope so, wanna make more snowmen (er...ah...people)

I assume you're talking to me @Jersey Devil.

I'm 12 miles north of the Florida line and birds from north of here are already coming south. Normally I see the first of them in September. They're already here now.

Like I said, sparrows come here in fall to overwinter. You don't see them here in summer. You see House Wrens which are a bit bigger and have short tails that angle upwards, unlike Sparrows whose tails go straight down following the angle of their spine. House Wrens are here all year but sparrows don't care for the heat and go right back north as soon as spring starts.

There are some birds from Florida that come up to Georgia in summer and go back to Fl. in winter but they are mostly birds that frequent swampy or shore areas. Water birds. I saw two Flamingos wading in a Cypress pond a few years ago in July not far from me. They were probably birds that just took off. Hialeah Raceway in South Fl. has escapees from time to time.
