    Is Nicandra physalodes poisonous?

Nicandra physalodes is suspected of having poisonous properties similar to those possessed by certain Physalis species implicated in the poisoning of sheep.

Also known as the Shoo Fly Plant, I had forgotten about it. Always use to grow some. Quite a drought tolerant plant so I might get some.

Like many plants not fit for consumption....it will cause upset if it is.

Does it work to repel flies? If so, I will get some for near the door to my back porch. My kitchen door is right off the back porch and the back porch door lets flies into the porch almost every time I open it. Then, naturally, I open the kitchen door and in they come. :(

I used to grow Chinese lantern Physalis alkekengi plants they were not invasive in my zone. They were really quite a different decoration for Halloween when they mature with bright orange paper like 2” lanterns hanging from swags around the porches.
Or even handy decorations dried as the paper lantern orange soft outer shell hold the seed . When the outter shell is skeletonized to a gold color and see thru outter cage effect while the bright orange seed hangs in the middle like an ornament just made by mother nature for the Holloween holiday.

    pic from the internet.

Pac— super gorgeous pics again. You have shown some common plants in a stunning fashion. Stunning, really.

Too right Zigs— I can remember accepting a plantlet my first year of gardening here. It took me five years before I got the last bit of it out. I love seeing it, but in other peoples’ gardens.
Will you folks jam those hips?

Sjoerd the pics of the Chinese lanterns are from the internet accompanying my description showing how the chinese lanterns can be used in different stages of the development of the flowering parts that turn into lantern like shapes and also once skeletonized look very different. I haven’t grown them recently to show the descriptions .

When letting out the dog tonite this guy was climbing on the screen door. I haven’t seen a praying mantis around here in years. He was determined to climb to the ceiling of the patio on the screen giving me the evil eye in protest from the flashing of the camera. He’s just a baby only one and a half inches so far. I’ll look for him tomorrow.
