Chicken of the woods grow on downed trees /stumps in our wooded area and the morels seem to pop up in the oddest places. Once on the rock section by the trash area, another time by the blacktop driveway.. all in unusual areas where old trees were taken out.

    Excellent Pac :)

Don't think I've ever found either of them, not through lack of looking, just not been in the right place at the right time.

I've found a similar fungus to the Chicken, grows at the base of pine trees. Can't remember the proper name but it's called Broody Hen too. Tastes lovely :)

Zigs we call them hen of the woods similar to your brood hen mushrooms which generally grow on the base of old growth oak and maples here in the PNW.

The main poisonous look-alike for chicken of the woods is the jacko lantern mushrooms which has a key difference. It has gills on its underside, while chicken of the woods has a smooth, pored surface. Jack-o'-lanterns often grow from the ground, have a darker orange color, and can be bioluminescent. By the way this particular bioluminescent
mushroom also is the key that lead to the discovery of the luminous gene in plants. That lead to marketing glowing plants, a genetically engineered gene is a new petunia plant , (about 5 years ago ) called the , ‘Firefly Petunia’ . These plants glow after sunset in full darkness from the newly developed flower buds in each plant for a few minutes. I found it very exciting.

I had them for a couple years. The grand kids thought they were magical plants from the Fairy Garden . It has to be absolutely total darkness to see the lighted buds. Looks like little light dots floating above the surface of the ground. The sunshine recharges the plant daily. Like some solar lights for gardens. I have to admit they were really exciting to see. I read about glow in the dark plants in the late 80’s early 90’s and waited so long to finally see a glow in the dark plant of my very own. I gotta say it was very exciting. Resembles those battery op fairy lights available at hobby stores. Glowing petunia buds were a fairy’s dream come true. Now I am waiting for the next genetically engineered plant to glow even brighter and longer. :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed:

I remember now that ours are called Cauliflower fungus. Only ever found a few of them.

First time I discovered bioluminescent fungus was in a swamp in Devon in the middle of the night on our way back from a pub that had served us whiskey all evening (my mate and I were only 13 but this was in the middle of nowhere and they didn't care)

There was an entire glowing tree stump in the middle of the swamp that we had to make our way round

I had no idea they can become so gigantic. I really enjoyed those huge fairy rings that must have had some mighty big fairy’s dancing thru them.

The cliffs sure looks like of the White Cliffs of Dover.

Here’s some crazy lichen plants that luv growing on the cherry trees.
Second pic looks like landscape from Mars. :sete_072:

They're pretty white when there's been a cliff fall :D

This is The White Cliffs of Dover when I actually was a Ziglet, I'd guess about 1967?

Zigs you are lucky to live is such a beautiful place in the world by the sea. Those white cliffs have been in so many movies thru the years and remember some huge storms.

You were a cute young little Ziglet in1967… in the pic living by the sea. Always in one place for generations. How cool is that. I didn’t know about Zigs nursery, or Zigs floral shop and Zigs barber shop …. those garden clippers sure must come in handy. Enjoyed your story. Thanks for sharing. :smt023
