Zigs you are pretty decent at finding ancient treasures. You have some unique finds. All I get is mud, yuck and worms.

Early this morning the usual mower ground check 7 hours before it started to rain , sleet snow all melted now.. Interesting day found a couple mounds and set a trap. Talk about the lil ground buggers it seems they are looking for a garden treat. Not much left to eat since I have had help eliminating all the garden food bait growing by their former relatives.

Nothing in the garden but i got my propagators down and put them in the conservatory. The foil is to trap the light on to the seedlings when I've sown them.

I'm like Logan only I have been indoors planting more seeds. I planted three kinds of Basil: Sweet Italian, Mammoth, and Thai. I love the purple leaves and the scent of the Thai Basil is wonderful !!
Planted Orange Zinnias, some Cosmos and Some Mexican hat Rudbeckia.

I picked up some peat pots and plan to plant my seeds that need cold stratification in those, then sink the pots into my 1 foot tall x 8'long raised bed. This way, no worries about weeds growing next to my seeds. I 'll get that done when my seed starting mix is wet. I let it soak for a while to get it thoroughly dampened.

Today I continued cleaning up, removed unneeded fencing and pulled up fenceposts, sticks and branches. About an hour of work.

Then I ground up saved egg shells.

Then I checked on the overwintering carnations. They were disappointing last summer, but maybe starting with more mature plants will help? Or maybe they will die when there is a hard freeze.

    IMG_5517.jpeg

Despite everything I read stating they need fairly dry conditions, they look quite lush following the atmospheric rivers.

I cleared last year's Roma tomato bed, pulled out the dead plants and weeds, removed steel wire tomato supports, and removed rotting cardboard mulch. After a little smoothing, I spread crushed eggshells for calcium and nitrogen.

    IMG_5522.jpeg

Much more difficult work ahead. It needs to be dug out and have hardware cloth installed under the soil for mole barrier.

The garlic I planted in late October, has all germinated through the maple leaf mulch. Looking good.

    IMG_5516.jpeg

It looks like about 100% have grown.

I checked the Egyptian Walking Onion containers. Not looking as good, but I think they will catch up later.

Rufus tired out after supervising me, wagging his tail at neighbors, and snooping around.

Fortunately, he had a dream about food, and awakened by mealtime.

It's bright and sunny but 0c degrees. So apart from feeding the birds, I'll be doing nothing.
I've some hedgehog pellets left over from last year, so I include some of them with the food. Nothing bigger than a blackbird can get to the food. So it must be those, sparrows, one or two blue tits, a couple of dunnocks, or "Rocky" the robin which must be eating them.

I've always put dried puppy food for the hedgehogs, I know that the hedgehogs wouldn't be around but the black bird and robin like it. I had to take it up because i saw a rat eating it.

@Clay_22 that sounds lije an ideal kitchen garden!

I've also grown Blue Lake Bush bean. They were good. I haven't seen a lot of difference between bush green bean varieties yet. Early Jalapeno also does well in my garden

I planted out 36 peat pots with flowers planted inside, in my raised bed. I watered that bed and the strawberry bed and found two rows of radish in the strawberry bed. Forgot alllll about that !! :D In that raised bed, with the strawberries, since the bed is snugged up to the chain link fence, I put 8 pots of sweet peas. Hope they grow.
