............. Origin of Left & Right (Politically speaking) I have often wondered why it is that Conservatives are called the "right" and Liberals are called the "left." By chance I stumbled upon this verse in the Bible: Moderator's note: Sorry Henry, removed due to our rule on politics Can't get any simpler than that. ------------------------------------------ . Another interesting speculation that I have heard espoused concerning 'left' and 'right' was this: Medical science tells us that the motor functions of the left side of our body are controlled by the right side of the brain and motor functions of the right side of our body are controlled by the left side of the brain, , , sooooooo, with that scientific fact as evidence, it's quite easy to infer that 'left-handed' people are the only ones in their RIGHT MIND!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Love to all, Hank
I've noticed that many left handed folks are very talented and intelligent. I'm right handed which explains a lot.
No, Carolyn, I'm right handed.. I've attempted to learn to do some things 'left-handed' over the years but with only minor success.. Hank
I'm a lefty... mostly. I eat and write with my left hand (and other things that take precision). Anything that requires strength is done with my right hand. I blame it on the nuns in first grade for smacking my hands with the ruler when I was learning to write. There are six children my family. Three leftys & three rightys. Mom and Dad would each sit at the ends of the dinner table. To avoid elbow bumping and spilled food... all the leftys one one side... rightys on the other.
I'm a lefty (you probably guessed that, right?). In second grade my well-intentioned but misguided teacher decided I should be right-handed. Fortunately my mother came to my rescue and the enforced use of my right hand for writing stopped. Cheryl, my husband has not-so-fond memories of nuns and rulers. But, his handwriting is very legible. How that happened with sore knuckles I'll never know . . . .
Jane (MG), your story reminds of one of the things that provokes me to think ugly thoughts about ignorance run amock in bureaucratic arrogance; when I see a lefty writing by turning their left arm, wrist, and hand into a corkscrew to write something because some ignorant teacher forced them to learn to write with their paper/tablet in a SPECIFIED position.. Hank
Hank, part of that problem is the result of smeared ink or lead as they write in a normal position so they need to compromise or accommodate the problem. I think my dad went through the learning to write with his right hand and he should have been a lefty. He really struggled in school. His penmanship is deplorable, if you can call it that. Cheryl, that was a great story. In my family (I came from a family of 7 children) there were no lefties, but every one of us who has children each have a lefty...is that weird?
No Carolyn, that is not weird, it is a sign that your family is blessed with some lefties who will offer tender guidance and care to the righties. My two right-handed sisters are terribly grateful for my constant help and advice, even though they are too reticent to mention it.
Absolutely correct because some teachers would take off points if your homework was messy. And don't get me started on spiral notebooks... I would have ridges embedded in my hand. When I asked if I could turn it the other way...naturally the answer was no. I had to conform. Maybe that's why I turned out to be sort of a rebel?
I remember a teacher slicing my hand open with the metal edge of a ruler. I think I was in first grade. And I remember the ridges from the spiral notebooks well. I'm a lefty, always will be.
