Sorry about the picture quality, I can ask my mom to take a better photo if needed. This is growing in her yard in North Carolina. She says the leaves are firm and the flowers smell good.
Looks a lot like white lilac (Syringa vulgaris 'Madame Lemoine'/ common lilac) to me Jen. The bees and butterflies love it and the scent is really lovely.
Lilac is what I thought at first, but do lilacs get the stamens (I think thats what they are...or is it the pistil?) poking out of the flower?
I hate to disagree with you, Eileen...but to me it looks like the Oleaceae Ligustrum Japonicum Coriaceum, Aka Rotundifolium.
I was doing some Googling last night and found a blog about Ligustrum japonicum, so that could possibly be what it is.
