But LL, that is a Viceroy butterfly ( Limenitis archippus ). None-the-less beautiful. Well done with making the .gif. Such a lovely thing.

I read that it is a Mimic of the Monarch..Geeze, I hope I get to see a real Monarch Edited- I found where I can edit the name. @Sjoerd - thanks!
No worries, mate. Like I said, it is still a real beauty. You ought to see some Monarchs though. I do not recall when their migration begins. If you ever travel down to Mexico, go to Michoacan Provence in the late fall, you will see more Monarch butterflies than you can count.
While taking Master Naturalist training, we had a class on butterflies and were given an identification guide beforehand. Some of the others had practically memorized the varieties of butterflies, and when one flew by, they would call out its name. I was in the back of the pack saying, "Oh, look, a butterfly!" Surprisingly, they didn't send me home . . . . Lillium, don't worry about giving the proper name to a butterfly. Appreciation is more important than the ID.
