This morning we saw two woodpeckers on the utility pole, and then a bit later, this one on the dead mesquite in the barn lot. Don't think it needs a manicure!
I agree with Clay_22 they are beautiful. How cool to see the woody’s.. we don’t have woody’s here but the red-breasted sapsucker. I can never get a decent pic cause he plays ring around the tree trunk . I’ve seen the sapsucker chase a squirrel around and around his fav tree until the squirrel ran off. He thinks a couple sappy running pines belong to him. And the holes in the trees that’s exactly what a few of my trees look like. Lil Bugger..
We are pretty sure the two woodpeckers we saw are a pair, and have their first offspring. This is a young bird but old enough to find the easy pickings at the platform feeder! You will notice the sunflower seed in its bill.
How lucky to be able to take these shots. What did that youngster do with the sunflower seed? It is nice to see north American birds. Thanks for this posting. I wonder what you will show next.
Sojerd, the youngster ate the seed. Our woodpeckers are omnivores--insects, berries, seeds, almost anything they can get their beaks around!
Ah Clay, I have no camera skills! My husband takes the photos--I just post them. I'll pass your kind remark on to him.
Ta Marling. The woodpeckers here also eat almost anything. My ones irritate me no end though, they destroy my “bee hotels” that solitary bees lay their eggs in, eating the larvae inside. They also sit on birdhouses and pull chicks out to eat. It is Nature, but it irritates me no end. Haha.
Oh yeas Sjoerd I totally agree… that is a huge issue here . We have huge stellar jays that do the same thing. They are the bully’s in the garden. I’ve seen squirrels chase them around tress round and round the jays go just to tease them. I have to take all the bird feeds in by this time of year so the jays move on. All the birds now can do their bath time in peace. There is a lot to eat in summers without feeders.
