I got some seeds of a friend of the Mimosa shrub. Here are the progress of this beautiful and strange shrub: 29 August 2016: 16 September 2016 The strange thing about this shrub is that if you touch the leaves they close! See this video that demonstrates this fascinating phenomenon:
Its a lovely looking plant,..very interesting and with so many different names,..i remember getting one from a friend of my Dad's,..both were gardeners and though i would be fascinated with the plant,..i was,..and had it for a very long time.
That is a very common plant in this part of the world and it is considered to be a weed. I had to remove it from my lawn regularly or else it might just take over it. When I came back from Europe after 6 months last year, some of the mimosa was really huge like 3~5 feet tall. I think I had them under control now and I'm still removing about a couple of the new plants daily. Be careful, they have thorns and their flowers are beautiful!
These plants I have seen growing in Trinidad and, as KK Ng, says there they are considered weeds. On the other hand HERE they're sold as unique exotics and cost a fair penny to buy teeny tiny ones. I do like the way they close quickly when touched.
Are these different from the mimosa trees we have here ? Back in the 50`s mimosa trees were a common landscape tree. They grow wild here and when in bloom are beautiful to me. They are small to medium size trees. These do not have thorns. They stopped using them because they did not live very long.
Mart the ones here are Albizia julibrissin also common name Mimosa tree because of the similarities to the Mimosa piduca, they are both in the Pea Family but each is a different Genus. Mimosa pudica (Sensitive Plant, Tickle Me Plant) Albizia julibrissin (Mimosa Tree, Silk Tree, Pink Siris)
Oh ! Thanks Toni,, figured it must be something different. What we call sensitive plant are weeds found along fence rows here. They do the same thing and close when touched.
