Actually, once I cut off the affected parts of the plant there was no more sign of the problem. They put out new growth and grew beautifully for the rest of the growing season. So I am not sure what caused it.

Toni, This looks like Box Elder bug damage. I have used sevin dust to control them. I know not everyone likes this answer, but I don't know if there is another "organic/biological" control of them. Put it down as soon as the foliage appears and dust every week or two or as soon as you see the damage.
