This is my first year growing it. Any tips on telling when they are ready to pick? I have some really nice sized ones, but I am thinking it is too early yet. TYIA :-D
mine are still small to medium, and white to almost green so I know I have a little while before I can pick mine. This should be a good topic.
I always pick my winter squash before the first frost. As the fruits ripen the skins will become a bit duller in color and the rind will be hard enough that a finger nail will not be able to dent it. Leave a little of the stem about an inch dont tear the squash from the vine i use my wire cutting pliers to cut them. Leaving part of the stem is supposed to keep it from drying out too fast.
