Hello everyone, This is my first post on the forum and I would like to say you have a nice thing going here. My reason for posting is because I have acquired an interest in keeping lotus flowers. I hope that someone may give me some advice on a few things in addition to how I may go about keeping a lotus. where can I order the plant or seeds online? I was hoping to keep the plant indoors during the winter and outdoors during the summer. Is it possible to keep the flower in a large pot filled with water or do they need to be kept in ponds? what is the level of difficulty in keeping such plants the way I plan to? I appreciate your comments. Thank you, Lorenzo 8) PS: I apologize for the over use of smilies. lol
Hi again, Ive done some research and found out some information on keeping lotus. However I can not find anything on keeping them indoors. I understand that you can keep them in small tanks but I can not find anything on indoor care and artificial lighting. I understand that they need much sunlight but this is obviously not possible indoors. Anybody have information on what I can use to keep the flower in full bloom indoors? Also are there any recommendation on which color/species to keep. I prefer a pink variety but I'd also be very happy with white. Thanks again. Any responses are much appreciated. Lorenzo
Hello, swervo513, I'm watching this topic and hoping somebody knows how to keep lotus. We tried to grow them from seed a few years ago, but it never germinated. I hope it's OK for me to sit down here as well?
atleast I know someone has glanced at my questions. Im glad you replied. And to the best of my knowledge they can be kept in small tanks (atleast 3 gallon and 1 foot high). My biggest problem is that I am not sure how much sunlight they need and if that can be artificially produced indoors. If so, what type of lighting is recommended? Ofcourse I would need to know what substrate to use in the tank and what other 'plant food' should be required. But that can be easily researched and is not my prime concern in this topic. Btw I am not completely sure on germinating lotus seeds but I know they should be kept in very shallow water approximately 3 inches and the water temp should be warm at about 80 degrees farenheight with much sunlight. Goodluck. Thank you Lorenzo
www.earthcare.com.au/lotus.htm I hope this website is of some use to you Lorenzo but I've had quite a hard time finding out anything about lotus flowers on the internet I'm afraid.
well that is very useful information. depending on this source i cannot keep lotus in small tanks. However, another web site says that you can. Im not sure why but maybe they have bred their own lotus plants to be smaller? Maybe they just want to sell more plants. That still leaves the lighting question open to comments and opinions. Well I see that I have a lot of research to do. With school starting again I don't know how much time and money I will have to spend. Considering I live in NY and the summer is about over, It may be best to wait until next spring. Thank you Lorenzo
