Hi all, I need some advice with this room. My roommate painted it this brown color and I'm not allowed (per lease) to change it.

I've tried to lighten it up with a few mirrors but the place still looks boring. I could use any suggestions on what and especially where I should put stuff on the walls. I abhor this color so anything that's NOT brown would be awesome lol. Just the desk and bed are in the room now, but I'm getting a dresser later.

If y'all want to draw on my pictures using paintbrush or anything that would be great.
    Thanks,

The good thing about neutral walls is that you can accessories with almost any color you want to put a different splash of color into your room :D

You are lucky that the room is basically neutral. This gives you the opportunity to brighten it up in many ways. You could change the curtains and have bedding to match in primary colours and you could add little extras - paintings, posters, and knick-knacks to tie in with your new colour scheme. Throw rugs are also a good way to make the room more cheerful and are inexpensive too. Do let us know what you decide to do as we love to see 'after' photographs. :-D

I would go with a teal or dark turquoise for the bedding and probably windows.Red throw pillows, and an area rug that has browns (dark), the color of your walls, red and turquoise. Liven it up with green plants and pictures on the wall.

Well, you really can't lighten it up but by putting other colors in the room you can make it more a background than the focal point that it is now. Take down the filmy white curtain, it doesn't give any color to take away from the brown. Remove the mirror, it only reflects the brown wall on the other side of the room.

New bedspread and curtains would be a start, whatever color you like, blue, green, red in either solids or prints will help. Get a new desk chair, even another metal folding chair in a bright color will help.
You are bound to have a favorite rock group, sports team, anime character or video game and can find posters to put on the walls. If you go with posters be sure to put them in frames, your landlord is not going to be happy if you fill those walls with thumbtack holes. Pictures of friends or special things like a dream car, Sports Illustrated model, etc would also help.

Is that a ventian blind or bamboo shade over the window? Either way, it is too wide for that window. For a very few dollars you can replace it with one that fits and in a color that coordinates or contrasts with the curtain you put up.

The more objects/pictures/posters/fabrics you put in there with color, the less obvious those brown walls will be. And I am not talking about covering every inch of the walls with posters and pictures, a few nice ones will do the job.

    Warm colors would be great

    hello,

i think warm colors such as deep red ,and all shades of it with some shades of orange(light pastel orange) will give it this cozy look....some african wall accessories, right light(maroccian lantrerns) ,and some amber glass maroocan candle holders would give a good theme.you can also add candles all over the place
and if you are not a fan of red and orange..then you can use light (baby aqua)with some throws and nice bedding.however, this would give it a more modern style...
i don't know if you can do some touches on the walls, but if you can the using the wall stencils with on the corner of one wall would be nice too....
if you want i could send you some pics with some ideas ...
    hope this helps you... :-D

    Thanks!

Those are all terrific suggestions and I particularly liked the one about primary colors. The thing about primary colors is that they are relatively dark.

My aim was to try to brighten up the room and the curtain (temporary) and mirrors were going to reflect something later on.

Is there a way for me to avoid primary colors and go with their lighter cousins to negate the brown effect?

Also I was wondering what colors do I want to AVOID here?

think about the peacock look at the colors it has....mixture between green, brown, blue green and yellow...

nothing works better than nature...those colors can give a very nice effect to the room....
mix those colors with two different shades of brown...or even three....
