So I live in Orland Fl and as many know we don't really get a winter. So my ? is I went to Home Depot today and saw that all the things I want to grow are already about 6" tall. Is it to early for me to buy them and start or should I wait until march like most things?
If they are cool weather things you can start them now. If you are still having frost any time you should keep them inside until it's warmer. I don't know the growing zone but mostly stores won't have things in stock until it's time to plant them because they would run the risk of having it frost or freeze on them in the garden centers. dooley
Well thank you Dooley. The plants they have that are already 6" tall are those of onions, toms, lettuce, and broc. Also some herbs. I was only asking because the news said it is time to starting putting the seeds in the ground and these were already established. I just don't want to wast a lot of money/time my first time
I buy a lot of plants already started or I did because I worked and didn't have a lot of extra time. Just watch the weather reports and cover them if it's going to go down to frosty temps. You can use newspapers, plastic jugs or just about anything to cover them. Just don't forget to uncover them the next morning. dooley
Well I put them where they would get 6+ hours of sun this morning and mid afternoon the were all wilted. Then I was told that they need morning sun and not the scorching afternoon sun. But the morning sun only last about 3 hours. Plus I thought that they might have suffered from pot transfer.
Sometimes they do have a difficult time until the roots get established. Give them a little extra water but try not to drown them. dooley
Well in a way it is great. The bad way is we never really get a winter. It only gets cool here for maybe a week or two and seldom below 32. I like the cold. The wife and I are talking about moving to tenn. in a couple years so will see what happens.
