I'm looking for a really cool shower gift. I've been invited to a baby shower for some special people and want to do somthing extra special for them. The baby's name is Lucy and she is almost a month old. I know they will get tons of outfits and blankets. I thought about a gift card because they could choose their own gift but I'd rather do something a little more personal. I've given baby books and picture frames and piggy banks in the past. Does anyone have a fresh, new idea? I haven't been to a baby shower in a real long time so I don't know what the new "in" gift would be. I kind of thought about a gift card to a portrait studio. One of our local photographers always has live bunnies around Easter. Is that too corny??

Back in the days when I was going to lots of baby showers my favorite gift to give was a diaper pail filled with the necessities.....diaper pins, cotton swabs, teething pain cream, baby aspirin, diaper covers, baby spoons, bibs, nail clippers, a thermometer....etc. Any thing that would normally not be thought of as 'baby shower gifts' but things that the new parents would have to go out at some inconvenient hour to buy because they discovered they didn't have them.
Of course many of those items no longer used by new Mom's but there are many things that could be sutstituted.
Most recently I started giving bags of newborn size disposable diapers or boxes of wipes...you can never have too many of those.

I like to think of more practical gifts than the fanciful ones.

Toni has a great idea there. I know I would have appreciated a packet like that. Here in Norway it's customary to give something silver to ensure prosperity in the future, so we've always given a small silver bracelet. Also, a nice plate and dish for the little one. I'm sorry I'm not very imaginative.

I think the gift card to the portrait studio is a great ideas as is Toni's. People always seem to give the cute outfits in newborn and 3 month sizes but not much in bigger sizes. I recently purchased a silver charm bracelet with a mother and child charm on it. Then mom could add other charms to remember special times with her child. (www.netaya.com has great jewelry and they ship everywhere. Each item comes in a gift bag or box and a gift card is free. The quality and prices are great.) I do like Toni's idea and plan to use hers for the next baby shower.

Thanks! I've done gift baskets for my close friends. I was able to shop through the entire pregnancy so it wasn't too expensive all at once :D I filled a HUGE basket with all the lotions, itty-bitty nail clippers, hair brush etc. My friends loved it! I did buy a small baby ring from the jeweler for my niece. I thought that was pretty special. I bet you her mom has lost it though  I love the silver bracelet idea! The charm bracelet is an awesome idea too!
    Thanks Girls ;)

At my baby shower for my now six month old, I received a lot of useful and not so useful things [diaper warmer *cough*]. The best by far, though, was the small necessities like Toni's idea. Fill a basket with baby lotions, nail clippers, a THERMOMETER!, gas relief drops, baby orajel, teething rings, rattles... things a new mother & father need. Or, how about a diaper cake? Those things are nifty. You can make your own, placing the bigger sizes on the bottom and the smaller ones as you go up with a little stuffed animal at the top. My sister's friend made her one for her baby shower a few months ago. This site here has them premade but is way pricey, but I wanted to link to it just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. http://www.lilbabycakes.com/babycakes.htm

Also, I love the gift certificate for the portrait studio idea. That would be really thoughtful, and you can never have too many photos of the little one. :stew1:

this is a bit different and you will either love it or hate it but here goes. what about a photo with a difference. If you could get a baby photo of mum amd one of dad then one of the new baby and ask a photographer to make one pic with all three babies on it. :stew1:

or what about starting a family tree for the baby.

I usually give diapers, wipes, and the necessities. An outfit is nice, or a gift card so Mom can pick up the things she really needs for baby. I like the idea of a family tree too :)

I like to buy some outfits for 3 months or bigger. they always get the newborn things but grow out of them too fast. Plus a nice soft blankie, and a special teddy....with a few hand lotions for the mom. Don't forget something for the mom. A nice lotion, bath gels. Something that will help them relax.

Don't forget a small gift for any other children if that applies so they don't feel left out. ;)

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

What awesome ideas! I went shopping this afternoon with several good ideas. We live in a small town so there isn't much shopping to do :'( I found an adorable photo frame that said "I Love Mom" and the cutest little silver bracelet! The bracelet will have her name and birthday engraved on it. She is an only child so I didn't have to worry about sibling presents :D I thought the cute frame would be great for mom ;) If I knew the grandmas I might have bought them a frame too. There were some cute ones. If I had more time and knew the families better I'd have done the baby photo collage or family tree. I think I'll do them for my sister's new little boy.
    Thanks again everyone :-D

Toni and I are on the 'same page'. Use to give many small useful items, that 'young' new parents don't think about needing. Nowdays it is diapers and more diapers! :D :D

We used to do the same thing for wedding showers. We filled laundry baskets with all the laundry items, soap, bleach, etc and all the cans of cleaning supplies and grocery staples that cost so much when you have to buy it all at once. I have to say I usually try to make a quilt for baby showers. I know not everyone has the time or know how for that but it's what I would do. dooley

I think giving photo collage or family tree is certainly a nice idea.
