We chopped down the old laurel hedge because it had gotten too much to take care of. It looks so barren now, but have gotten to know the gardening neighbor real well. Old wire fence ( photo / image / picture from Jewell2009's Garden ) All the fencing under the ivy hedges is the old "hog wire", but it had been ages since I had seen it. For summer I planted scarlet runner beans that will cover it by July and have little red flowers before the big old bean pods appear. I also planted pumpkins, cucumbers and squash between the flowers along the fencing. Sanctuary revealed...privacy no more ( photo / image / picture from Jewell2009's Garden ) The privacy is gone with the huge (20 foot tall) green wall of hedge taken out, but it is nice to visit over the fence again. It won't be long before we are both enjoying the Montana clematis blooms and greenery, as it and the ivy cover the wire. Oh yeh, this is the area where my big fish pond is. From where the following picture was taken I would be looking right at the duplex next door, but I don't even notice it. The trick of the mind and photo. You've got a lovely pond. Your garden is so nice, I'm certain the neighbour is very glad because the hedge's gone now.
I think you did the right thing taking down the laurel hedge Jewell as it gives so many other plants a chance to grow now and get light. The pond is lovely and those waterlilies are really beautiful - I'm still waiting for mine to bloom. It must be nice to be able to chat to your neighbour again now there's no real barrier between you.
Yes, visiting and the lack of heavy maintience is a real plus with the hedge gone. Got a lot of gardening space that is in the sun too :-D I get to share some vegies also.
