I have been trying to get rid of some of my blackbirds in the pergola area because they are chasing all my small birds away...so I went to the bird store and he told us about a different type of feeder called a squirrel buster plus. Here is a picture of it.I don't have a squirrel problem but if a bird sits on it heavier than 4 ounces, the doors close and they cannot get the food. You can set the weight to more or less weight if you want.

He also mentioned that I should only feed safflower on the tray feeder because they don't care for it. So I did it. I did have a few blue jays and a couple cardinals but I missed putting peanuts out for them. I decided 2 days ago to try setting some peanuts in the shell on the ledge of the patio blocks and within an hour, I had a blue jay..I added a few sunflower chips and peanuts without the shell. Later I had a cardinal and he has been coming back a lot to eat. I also had a few other visitors.

I do still get a few red winged blackbirds on the feeder but most of the other blackbirds don't stay. ..I hope I found a solution to my problem..

So glad the new feeder seems to be working for you Sherry. I wonder if we have ones like yours over here as it would help to deter the starlings? I really enjoy seeing the variety of birds you have calling for a meal as (apart from the sparrow) we don't have any of your species here.

Finding that feeder was a stroke of luck, Sherry.
I liked the pics of the cardinal, oriole and jay. Those birds are truly beautiful.

I get a real kick out of you and your bird cam! It's neat to see several photos in a row showing the birds doing their bird thing. Neat that you have solved your big bird problem too. You really care for your little guys.

Great shots Sherry. I don't put out food for the birds this time of year..there are so many bugs and other things for them to eat. I still get to see them in the yard though.

Looks like they should have their little bellies full. Neat bird feeder and as always great pictures.
