On Saturday I spent the day on the Bay with friends. This is Rudder, the first mate of the boat! He's a Labradoodle -- half Labrador Retriever, half Poodle. What a character. He was everybody's buddy -- shared the love all around. Cutie-face... "Rudder" ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden )
I wonder who it was that thought up the combination of Labrador and Poodle? When I was a vet nurse it would have been unheard of to mix the two pedigree breeds together. Rudder is certainly a very unique dog and has lovely brown eyes.
He's the first labradoodle I've seen :-D I met a goldendoodle at the vet's office. He was half golden retriever and half poodle, cute cute cute His owner told me that the poodle gene eliminates shedding!
Deanna, I think Rudder's owner had the shedding issue in mind when he chose the Labradoodle "breed" though I'm not sure it's officially a breed after all (don't you agree Eileen?). He lives on the boat and I guess a big shedding dog in such a small space would be problematic. Frank, I think he was thinking -- "why do you keep calling my name and then pointing that thing at me????" He was hard to pin down -- and is much more adorable in real life.
I have a feeling that Labradoodles will be the 'in thing' now but, to be honest, they are cross-breeds. There again that's how most of our pedigree dogs came into existence isn't it? I have to admit that I like the idea of a non-shedding dog of that size though. :-D
Ooh, I love him. We will be getting a puppy for my middle son next year and after lots of research, have decided to get one of these Labradoodles. They are smart, friendly, very tolerant of small children, easy to train, and have that great low-shedding coat. Around here, they are very popular and even though they aren't a recognized breed, they command big bucks.
This dog, Rudder, was a wonderful dog. Sociable, well trained, funny. Really nice. It was kind of funny to see him hesitate about jumping in the water (he lives on a boat) so I guess his Lab water gene was overrun some by the poodle!
We just adopted a Golden Doodle through the Golden Retriever Rescue of Wisconsin. Her mom was rescued from a puppy mill. She's an awesome puppy...the easiest one we've ever had to train. I'm hoping she turns out looking more like a golden retriever than a poodle though!
