I have found a way to feed the woodpeckers and they really seem to enjoy it. I have suet hanging but these guys, the big and small ones love to eat it out of the holes my husband drilled in the posts for me.

Now this is the same bird in all pictures but different angles the beak looks longer...could it be a downy ?

A really handsome bird Sherry. What a good idea to fill holes in trees with suet for your woodpeckers. :-D

What a delight seeing your woodpecker.
I am glad that you found a way to re-size your fotos. Which program did you wind-up using in the end?

That's very clever... do yoyu make the suet that you put in the holes or buy it? They must love that.

Sjoerd....Frank said I could still use the Photobucket links in the posts and blogs. It just doesn't work in the albums. I am just happy to be able to post again.

Check out the slight differences between the Hairy and the Downy. The Hairy is larger and has a beak almost the same length as it's head. The Downy is smaller with a beak that is only almost half the length of it's head.
I love checking these things out, learn something new each time. ;)

toni...so I guess this would be a Hairy that I captured on those pictures, right? I thought it was but I look at different pictures taken minutes apart and I get confused. Some angles the beak looks longer too. If I wasn't positive when they were taken, I might think they were different. Just the lighting got worse in the first too.

Plus this is the biggest one I have so I would say a Hairy for sure if we went by that.

This is a hairy, much longer beak than the downy. Nice to have them visiting.

I took a picture of the hairy and the downy on the same log, (at different times). Then I put them together to show the difference, this may be a help to you. You can see the size of the bird and the beak.
