Another excuse to go shopping at thrift stores. Buy a gaudy sweater for $5, unravel and have yarn for other projects. I think I will go wander thru a couple of thrift stores today before they start packing away the winter sweaters. These are really good instructions for how to unravel those sweaters and take care of the yarn afterwards. http://www.neauveau.com/recycledyarn.html
I tried it a few years ago but had bought sweaters made with sport weight/2 ply yarn...that turned out to be a pain. I bought some sweaters today that are a cotton/ramie blend and bigger gauge so I am hoping it will be easier. Cause I see some fantastic scarves coming from this yarn. I hadn't heard about that yahoo group, guess there is a group for every idea you can come up with
What a great idea ! I have stopped knitting, as it hurts my hands to hold the project, I will be on the look out though, my sister does crochet
A blog I read frequently, laughing purple goldfish, http://laughingpurplegoldfish.com/ uses a lot of recycled yarn. She also has a group on Ravelry with great ideas.
My mother was a great recycler of old woolens. As we grew she used to unravel jerseys and remake them into new ones. If the wool wasn't suitable to make us new clothes then she would knit colourful little teddies and other animals to give to charities. :-D
