Just over a year ago, I was sitting in the break room at work chatting with co-workers. Out the window you could see the landscaping at the next building. No one knew the name of a certain plant, so I grabbed the camera and took a photo of it. Got online and starting doing searches for it. The only search criteria I used was "ball of irises on stalk". I looked and looked. Ran across a few garden sites trying to ID the plant. No luck. Until I ran across Garden Stew... and a forum just on plant ID! WOW! So... I join the site and entered what little info I had and the photos... and in less than an hour, I had my answer. The plant in question was "Lily of Nile". I vowed to get some seeds off the plants and start my own. I watched it for months and months waiting on the seeds. Then one Monday, check on the plants.. but the landscapers had pruned everything back over the weekend. ARGH! I've seen these plants all over, so I started to watch out for some and "steal" some seeds. One day while at the hardware store, I saw some and grabbed a few pods and went directly home and planted them. Later on, sprouts! I was so excited. I posted photos of them here, only to find out that what came up was NOT Lily of the Nile. ARGH again! So this spring, I went to the local "big" nursery and bought a couple of the plants. One was supposed to be blue and the other white. They both turned out to be blue... but that's okay with me... because they are so pretty! So... to make a long story short (I know... too late!)... the plant that brought me to Garden Stew was the Lily of the Nile... and here's photos of my first one blooming! Honestly.. I am a stay at home 25year old dad who needs projects to stay occupied.Had fish tanks salt and fresh over 13 at one time in the house! Had two ponds about 2,000 gal.(I love fish) and was looking for something beneficial to my staying at home all the time. I stumbled across this site just in a simple question on how to grow a tomato plant. Now just over a year later I have a garden with all kinds of veggies and am still in the very beginning learning proses of how this works but loving every moment of it. I have loved and still love this site and have passed it on to many others. Garden Stew For Life!
I was struggling with trying to get lettuce seeds to germinate and was looking for some tips. Google led me to this thread http://www.gardenstew.com/about18478.html and I was so enthralled watching KK's progress, wanted to learn how to grow lettuce like the HydroGardner and was so amazed at everyone's incredible input that I had to keep coming back.
I was sitting at my desk thinking about how I could keep track of all the things growing in my garden..I decided to do a search for "garden blogs", when the results came up I looked at over 25 and loved this one when I clicked on the link...I love the pictures, the wealth of information, the blogging, the setup and I will be here for quite some time...I love this site! My sister Dooley introduced me to the site. I did do a lot of gardening back then. I really enjoy it and all the people so I won't be leaving it.I've also passed the site along to others. wannabe
I used to go into another site, but the people started changing. It got to where I would make a post and no one would reply, I guess I wasn't in their clique. But none of that here!
Way back when I was looking for black hollyhock seeds. PianoLady had some and that is what brought me to "The Stew" I miss PianoLady :'( Have met some wonderful people!! Don't get to visit as much as I'd like but I check in every chance I get!
I'm with the captain. I lurked here a while and people were just so nice, and helpful, and chatty, and kind in their remarks. And how could I not want to stay with a site that had a Dooley turtle?
I was looking up ideas for my pond. I cam across this site anddecided to join. I am so happy that I did I love coming here everyday. I enjoy posting my photos and keeping track of my flowers.
