I don't think I have ever seen a brown pigeon before, but lo and behold one appeared this morning. Can anyone provide any insights? Brown Pigeon ( photo / image / picture from Frank's Garden )
No insight but I've seen them around. I like them because they're different. I also like the ones with lots of white in them.
You find many colour variations nowadays in pigeons Frank. Whether it's because racing birds or homing pigeons have escaped and bred with the true Rock Doves I don't know. :-? It's nice to see a flock of these 'mutated coloured birds' though as they can vary from almost pure white through to the origional Rock Dove colours.
I never realized there were so many different colorations on pigeons, I think I have at least one of each at my feeders everyday tho. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Rock_Pigeon/id Under Field Marks, see if bird #6 looks like yours Frank.
In Malaysia the pigeons are usually free to fly which were mainly abandoned by their owners. They form their own groups and breed freely. A brown pigeon here is common and there are many many more other colours, even multicolours.
Some more visitors just arrived ( photo / image / picture from Frank's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Frank's Garden )
I love the markings on those two birds Frank. Very striking and handsome. I wonder what colour variations those pigeons are going to come up with next for you? :-D I'll await the next photograph with anticipation.
Love the black and white birds, Frank. You must be putting something on that ledge to get them all to visit. Now, be careful not to fall off the balcony!!!
Kay, actually I have not put anything on the ledges. I think because they don't have access to a laptop and can't use a keyboard, they rely vicariously on me for their daily Stew fix.
They will be well informed birds! I guess you'd better not put out food for them, or you'll have the entire ledge full of hungry birds!
I think I see a band on the guy on the left. These could be racing pigeons. My uncle raised them and they fly great distances. Many things can make them come down..storms, fatigue. Your ledge looked like a good place to stop for a break!
There are three base pigments for pigeons. Brown black and red. But we see them differntly because of the patterns on their feathers. Take a black clumped pigeon. It looks blue. Brown clumped looks sliver. But when parents with dominant browns had parents with dominant Brown they have children that appear completely Brown. It's really cool how genetics work.
