The second year we lived at the farm I developed a real need to get chickens. I don't know what came over me--but I NEEDED chickens. I ordered chicks from a hatchery a few miles from here, brought them home, put them in the guest bedroom in a large plastic tote with heat, clean bedding, chick feed and a chick waterer. When they got large enough they moved to their coop in the barn.
People say chicens are dumb. Our chickens have 1)daily catered meals, 2)water delivery, 3)a cleaning service, and 4)bodyguards. They sure are dumb! I should be so dumb . . . .

This is what they looked like when they arrived. They grew up, developed attitudes, and now this is what they look like--

We have six hens, get 3, 4, or 5 eggs a day, and boundless entertainment from their antics!

    Bali,
Would you believe that going out of the house in winter to get eggs really isn't a problem here in Texas? We rarely have a day below freezing.
We brought our snow shovel with us when we moved from upstate NY, and now use it to make paths around the vegetable garden! Sure beats shoveling snow.
Our hens are really just pets. I do enjoy watching them play "Boppo the Clown" with cherry tomatoes on their beaks, and chasing grasshoppers. There's a lot of entertainment value in a chicken!

My mother has always kept chickens (or hens as we call them in Ireland). We have a little problem with foxes, and must always make sure they are locked up securely during the dangerous hours. It's always relaxing to hear their chuckling as they potter around the farm.
