I got this from the supermarket yesterday. Bought it only so I could plant it and obtain the seeds later!

Normally, the onions we get here are no more then 2 to 3 inch across - But this is imported from Iran (and it's weight is well over a kilogram). Oh and I was told that this is a small one that was probably picked too early!

What a beauty that onion is!! It would last me for quite a few days. Hope it tastes as good as it looks.

Nice onion, can you really get it to produce seeds? Nobody sell onion seeds here and your idea is a great one. How long does it take to get the seeds?

OK everyone, it took some time, but here it is! I finally planted the giant onion - So in a few months time (probably when spring time comes) it should give me seeds.

I basically was waiting for my compost to arrive. So until that happened, I put the onion over Leonardo DiCaprio's ugly mug!
    :-D
(after filling it with water first)!
    :-D
This way the onion sprouted roots, and so now it will do very well in the soil.

For comparison, I have also put a regular Pakistani onion besides the Irani giant (the heavy duty hatchet by the way is just there in case any snake decides to say hello)...

I however also had planted a regular Pakistani onion about a month ago. So that is doing very nicely also! :)

That's fascinating! It had never occured to me that you could sprout, grow, and collect seed from onions that way. We always buy seed or sets for our onions.

As the onion grows, I will from time to time keep everyone over here updated (with pictures)! I by the way also welcome every type of suggestion anyone here may have. Because I am aiming for the best results, so any idea which will get me that little bit of extra edge - Will be most welcome.
    :)
By the way, one can do the exact same thing (in order to obtain seeds) with carrots too!

that is one humungous onion s-h! what a great idea to plant it for seeds!

i have taken onions and used all but the bottom part, then planted the bottom part and it rooted and grew a plant. one can do it with carrot tops and other root veggies too. somewhere we had discussed this, with growing a lettuce end.

    keep the pics coming!

Yes, as a child I too used to do the exact same thing with carrot tops. I think pineapple tops can also be planted this way, (but they will be too big for Leonardo DiCaprio's ugly mug)!
    :-D
OK seriously now, why throw away anything which has the full potential to develop into a new plant, that will also give you seeds later?

Besides, this onion is a giant - So I far one can't wait to plant the seeds I'll be getting from it! I honestly had no idea that in Iran they have such huge onions!!! Really, the shopkeeper I bought this one from, told me that it is actually a mediocre size - Probably because it was picked too early (perhaps that's why it sprouted a little on it's own)...

Anyway, I am going a little bit insane imagining how big an onion will it's seeds finally give me later!? :)

Thanks guys! Yes, I too am looking forward to growing some ginormous onions from seeds. So in a matter of a few months, I am sure I'll get there - And of course, you all will get to see it first! :)
