No,no, not THAT kind of grass! I just found out that I don't have to spread my cut grass to dry, rake it up, and then use it for mulch. I can take it directly from the mower's bag to the garden and spread it around, leaving a free space around plant stems. For years I thought that fresh grass would rob nitrogen from the soil as it went in--I was wrong, and I'm so glad. I don't mind working, I just don't want to overdo it by adding steps that aren't necessary.
Hi marlingardener, we do that with all our grass. Glad you discovered it. We try do smother/suppress as much as we can, so we don't have soooo much weeding to do. I'm all for saving "work" where I can. I want my kids to help not "complain" me to death.
Interesting. If the bag on my mower weren't so small, I'd be tempted to try it. But... it would take me all day to mow! Mow a little strip... take off and dump bag... mow a little more... Nah.... too much stopping & starting! :-D
I have done that with my runners...but I discovered that there were seeds in those clippings and I wound up haviong to do a lot of finger-picking of grass from around my runner beans. haha. Still, in other situations it can be a pretty good mulch.
Sjoerd, You are right. We only put it on when we aren't cutting weeds and grass seeds. Otherwise that goes to the hot compost pile.
