This wierd weather we are having is starting to affect the animals. It will be 50 deg. F one day and in the 20's with snow showers the next. I saw one of the male Goldfinch today and he was starting to turn into his summer plumage already. About 3 months early!

I've noticed that some of our birds are colouring up too CK. They seem to think it's already spring but we've got a long way to go before their breeding season begins - at least for their sake I hope so. We may not have had the severe winter that we had last time around but who knows what's in store for us over the next couple of months. :-?

While a lot of species can take cold weather I wonder if some are caught off guard by unusual warm periods and are in danger of perishing during the colder spells.

Ducks came into our pond about six weeks earlier than usual. We have more passerines at an earlier date, and are getting "inquiries" about some of the bird houses.
We keep track from year to year because we are with Cornell's backyard feeder watch and have pretty good records for the time we've been on the farm.
    Weird is right! :smt087

We are back to light snow, about an inch now. But they are saying back to near 50 deg. F again next week. I don't mind the mild weather, but it's just weird! Still haven't used a full cord of firewood yet.And still have 4 more cords put up. Just means I won't have to cut as much this summer! :)

We have barely had an inch of snow all winter. Most days are unseasonably warm for this part of the world, and the nights only chilly. A few nights have been in the teens, but not very many. It is very strange here too. I would like some good old fashioned winter before spring arrives...as soon as we can get some more wood cut. We are cutting our own wood this year, and have a lot of sore achy muscles and a broken wagon.
