I was thinking, (dangerous, I know) about getting a horse drawn single bottom plow, and hooking it up to my lawn tractor. For turning under large amounts of organic matter in the fall, and expanding the garden just a bit. A buddy of mine would drive the tractor, and I would hang on the plow, much as I did as a youngster. Downside?
Downside is not being so young any more and falling off. Lost my wallet that way once a looong time ago.
Downside? Make sure your buddy is really a buddy, and won't take off at speed, dragging you behind! Also tire tracks are deeper and wider than hoof prints, and the exhaust isn't nearly as beneficial.
This does not look like a safe idea. Attaching it to the tractor and letting the tractor do the work seems safer. Jerry
They make turning plows for most garden tractors. Would not be much difference in price and a lot less work. My main concern would be that the tractor might not pull it in a low enough gear to be safe and not drag you along.
Your "lawn" tractor may not pull the plow...Now if you have a "garden" tractor that's a horse of a different color. Depending on the brand and model of tractor you have, it may or may not be designed to accept a sleeve hitch. Most "lawn" tractors do not have a strong enough transaxle to withstand the pull of a plow and they are not geared correctly for pulling. Brinly-Hardy makes moldboard plows and many other attachments specifically for garden tractors, they do require a sleeve hitch to be mounted to your garden tractor. Can you imagine what would happen with tractor going forward and plow hitting a good size rock ? You would be saying Whoa Nellie !
Thank you all. I have been given reason to reconsider. I have neither a sleeve or 3 point hitch. This thought and experiment will require further interpolation.
