I "officially" finished my berry area today...
Blackberries and strawberries (with bananas in there also).

The blackberries are "sandwiched" between those poles/wire. The bananas are those alien-looking things on the left. No fear... they'll be back to 5-6 foot tall in no time. I'm just hoping to get some fruit from them by next year.
And here's my strawberries... I can't wait until harvest time "rolls" around.

WOW Cheryl I love what you've done with those tyres!! Who would have thought that they could look so good in a garden. I think the pastel colours are very pretty.:D Now all you have to do is wait until the fruit appears and ripens for you.

Hiya Cheryl. That looks like a great set-up. I especially like the colours.
Now then--you really do have to keep us posted on this project.
    It looks so good.

Eileen... I'll be so happy to walk out there and pick some fruit. I bet half of them won't even make it to the house. :-D

Sjoerd... I'll definitely post an update when things are really producing.

Thanks everyone! And thanks to one of the members (I can't recall who at this time) who posted some painted tires in their garden a while back that gave me this idea!

You mean that half of them will make it to the house then? Here it's a fight between the birds, Ian and myself as to who can eat the most strawberries and blackcurrants before reaching the back door. :D I usually win and make sure there's just enough to make pies and sorbets with.

Hubby doesn't like strawberries. The Dragon won't be around... so it'll just be a fight between me and the birds! :smt071

I saw painted tires tiered like that in one of the garden magazines I bought recently but I like yours so much better. Good luck getting the strawberries for yourself. ;)

I will never tire of your creative ideas. What would have ended up in the junk heap ends up providing a home for plants as well as an interesting decoration. I was going to say that you are on a roll except you stole my word :-( When strawberry harvest does 'roll' around we will again be entertained by your colorful usage of vulcanized tree sap.

Now I will roll away, :)

Jerry... I'll never tire of your nice words.

I can't take credit for the idea. I saw it here last year.
Almost everything out there is "junk". When I bought new tires, I told the guy that I wanted my old tires back. He said that they weren't fit to use anymore. I said... they aren't going on a vehicle... they're going to be for my strawberries. He looked at me like I was a nut!
The bottom of the top tire is an old lid off a trash can. The wooden posts have just been laying around here. Same with the t-posts for the blackberries... and we had wire left over from a recent fencing update.
I did have to buy a bale of hay... and the paint... and all the whirly stuff to try to scare the birds away.
I had told my family that I was saving the tires for some raised beds. They just shook their heads when they saw them painted. I told them "you think I'd have just ugly black tires out there?"

My strawbewrries have grown almost all winter long. And only quit multiplying in Jan. Now with warmer weather they are starting again. You are warmer than we are so you better get more tires. Mine are Sequoia and Quinault. Hope I spelled that right.

    These are also Quinault.
This is just for fun (and for a tasty treat). I'm really curious to see how they do in the tires.
And since tires for my truck cost over $100/each... I hope I don't have to get new ones for at least a couple of years.
    :-o

Since last mid summer, I have every pot I have full and needing thinning. At the produce stand here they are only about $3. a six pack. And some of the cells have more than one plant. I think I bought two six packs to start. I have all my pots full, and a couple of those plastic dish pans, and a few that rooted in the ground around the pots. You will see what I mean when yours start to grow and spread.

I bought eight plants... I think they were just over $2/per plant. And they are more than welcome to spread... actually I'm hoping they will take up most of that area. Maybe I should start looking for strawberry recipes now. :D
