The front garden before the ratty boxwoods were removed

    Immediately after

Soil amendment begun around existing plants, and spread somewhat into the overall beds...more tilling and such needed. But the area where the replacement shrubs go is done, and now I'm just waiting for the order to arrive.

And SURPRISE! Was not expecting company! ;)

Ronni, what great luck! That is a vermin-catching, cricket-killing Milk Snake. They are completely non-venomous, although like anything else with a mouth and teeth, they will bite. Keep him/her around to protect your plants and your house.
They resemble the venomous Coral Snake, but if you remember the rhyme " Red touches black, friend of Jack; red touches yellow, you're a dead fellow" you'll be able to recognize the difference between Corals and Milks.
Your front area is looking better already! :stew1:

It looks like you are doing great work there.
What a nice surprise to see that snake. That guy ought to keep mice and rats from trying to get into your house.

    He has attractive markings.

Is there any natural way to attract such protector to my garden, like this cute snake? :) Just wait for my luck to play out or do something in particular?

It's beginning to look good already. :D Isn't it wonderful to transform an area like that? The snake's pretty too.

Thanks everyone. I'm flying by the seat of my pants here because I'm so new at this, so it's nice to get the encouragement! :stew2:

I'm already laughing at my anal/ocd self though, because I've almost decided that one of the plants I planted isn't positioned quite right, and I've been fighting with myself for two days now about whether or not to move it. We're talking about 4 inches over...in the scheme of things my intellectual self knows it's not a big deal at ALL, but my obsessive self seems to be winning this battle. ;)

If the plants I ordered would just arrive, I'd have other things to keep me busy!

Ronni... if you're not happy with it, move it now. Because when it gets established and you add all your other plants, you probably won't have the chance.
I'm guilty of digging up a plant and just turning it a few degrees... or moving just a few inches.
And it is a big deal if you're not satisfied. So I say "go for it!" :stew2:

Really? It's not just me? 8)

Well, then I will! It's been driving me batty. I don't work Friday so first thing in the morning I'll be out there, shovel in hand, moving that sucker over those 4 measly inches! ;)
