yes sjoerd, with carolyn's help! i can't figure out how to use that search thingy! i was just looking for your post and info on planting the fava/broad beans in the root trainers. gonna give it a go this year again. i waasn't sure if i needed to soak the beans first. also, you posted eating them at young staage, like the size of a finger, you don't eat the beans themselves? the seed? i'm confused...
Hiya Bunkie. I do not soak my bean seeds before planting them in the root trainers. I just plant the beans, soak them with water and then give them no more water at all until they have germinated and are standing erect. I pick them young for the best flavour. I do NOT eat the "shell", just the bean itself (the seed if you will). You can feel the beans through the hull (shell) and when it feels like it is as barge as your thumb tip (the nail area), then I pick the bean and shell it. After you pick and shell a few pods, you will develop a feeling of what is the right size to pick. One tip is that the bean size has little to do with the size of the pod.The pods can be enormous but only be full of air until the bean develops fully. I hope that this is clear. I NEVER skin the seeds before eating, although if one waits too long to harvest the beans, and the beans have gotten large the "skin" is more noticeable. I still do not remove the skins. I am aware that some folks do, though.
thanks sjoerd! i think that's what happened the first time i grew them, i picked them too large. they had a really thick skin that shed off pretty easily. they were kind of disgusting. this is what happens when i don't ask enough questions! pics of new plants coming soon! i appreciate all your help sjoerd!

Hiya Bunkie, I enjoyes watching that "Flash Garden" vid. It sort of reminded me of the Flash Mob events that one would see in the past. Good luck with those broad beans this year.
