Happy to report, "Knothead" is doing well. On Sunday he built his first nest in HIS tree... only to have another squirrel come by and trash it. So... looks like he's been rebuilding it. And he used up another one of his lives... fell out of the tree from WAY up. Hubby thought he was hurt, but he collected his thoughts and scampered right back up there. He usually comes out right before dusk looking for food. We still have his cage in the tree with a dish for his food and his water dish (he hasn't discovered the bird baths yet). And he's learned that being a picky eater doesn't cut it in the wild. I do make sure to put him some extra sunflower seeds, along with peanuts and that "good" bird seed... and a piece of corn on the cob every once in a while. He still likes to get petted.. but mostly.. he just wants food! Knothead - 74 days after being rescued ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
I have had baby squirrels before. They are just like little monkeys. Mine ran all over the house when I was a kid. Liked to sun on the window sill.
I love these updates Cheryl. Knothead sure knows how to pose for the camera! He looks to be getting on just fine
Knothead is looking great Cheryl. Maybe, in time, he'll find a mate and bring his babies to your garden.
Thanks everyone! He's so funny to watch... does the silliest things. I think the other squirrel is jealous of all the goodies he gets... that's why he messed up his nest!
I hope he learns how to live on his own...hopefully he doesn't go to a neighbors and want to be petted. Someone might hurt him. We did have squirrels fall from our large oaks years ago...just to scamper off. I was washing dishes at the sink and I saw it hit...I was sure I would be picking up a dead body. Great job on rasing him.
Ronni....if you haven't seen the pictures from the beginning, please take the time to look back and check them out. It is wonderful what they have done for the squirrel . Too bad all of the posts couldn't be combined about the little guy. (or gal)
Sherry.... why didn't I think of adding the updates to the original post? I wonder If I still can... Hmmm... slow morning at work... I'm gonna give it a try. edited to add: Well... how about this... from now on I'll add any other updates here. But in the meantime...
