did not want to toss them so we recycled them. As well as an old rusted wok. Ladybugs recycle style ( photo / image / picture from thepondlady's Garden )
What an adorable family of ladybugs and from recycled materials, very clever. Now I will have to be on the lookout for old floating lights and an old wok at thrift stores.
I got the idea from a lady that made them from cut in half bowling balls. Anything half round would work. Try this link http://shabbybeach.blogspot.com/2009/06 ... -done.html
Darn why do I always see posts like this when I've just had a clear out?!! I could have had a lovely family of ladybirds to grace my garden too if I hadn't cleaned out the greenhouse. :'(
Very cute and clever! [Do they have little motors in them, so you can turn them on to walk around your garden ? I just thought they would scare my dogs and cats if they did... My pets would still be curious anyway.] Didnt someone here mention a DH who was an electrician ? I saw a post on Birds & Blooms about someone who used the glass shades from old industrial lights to make an upturned base for a birdbath or bird feeder. These just reminded me of their idea.
I have to kill lady bugs off all winter. From windows, walls, they are just every where. And I still have hordes of them in my garden! So I am not really fond of these little critters. (The live ones) But these lady bugs, I could go for these. They are just adorable, love them! Great job.
A very well thought out project indeed! I think the only improvement I can suggest over here - Is to have them painted with the glow in the dark luminous/fluorescent paint! Today, just about anything can be found by doing a simple search through Google or any other internet search engine. I just found this page where they are selling this stuff in bulk: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/89642 ... gment.html
These were made 4 years ago! only glow paint they had then was a greenish glow paint. I have a few more lights that have quit working !I might try this kind of paint on them.
The ladybugs you are likely having problems with are those imported Asian lady beetles. They are very invasive here, and not at all like the ones we are used to. I guess whoever imported them to the US just thought that ladybugs were the same all over the world, and totally forgot things like the Kudzu vines [aka 'The Vine That Ate The South'] and other flops from importing things ought to give them a clue. Let it grow where it belongs, not someplace else.
I always wondered about this question: Are there any male Ladybugs? Since the name of this insect is "lady+bug", I naturally assumed that they all must be ladies... But if this was the case, than how do they reproduce? So logic dictated that there must be a male Ladybug out there too. So thanks to Google, I've now found this page where detail regarding their gender is give! http://www.ehow.com/facts_5978072_diffe ... ybugs.html So I now move a motion, for the poor and oppressed male Ladybugs - Who from this time onwards shall be known as "GentlemenBug suffragettes". Who because of the name, are now facing unimaginable discrimination! Somehow, someway, me must bring equality (including option to vote) to these insects! "But why, some say, the GentlemenBugs? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas? But we choose to rename them to GentlemenBug. We choose to change Ladybugs to GentlemenBugs in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."
