Hank, we live in the gun capitol of the US--Texas. Sidearms are considered accessories. However, I have found that a stern look and a firm tone of voice will avoid most confrontations. That's the advantage of being a older woman who has faced down a classroom of 30 eighth graders!
I think I would dress like that, too. Way too much wild life that is dangerous in that part of the country and you can also look like you are just as dangerous to the two legged form as well.
In Alaska, there are hundreds of miles with no people but plenty of the four legged wildlife that are also out looking for food. Being armed can be a necessity. Only concealed handguns are considered fashion accessories here. You can open carry handguns, rifles and shotguns if they are in your vehicle, sort of a grey area around that one. Not sure a stern voice and stare-down will save your life or pocket book when facing a career criminal. We have two friends that found out first hand the best defense against someone determined to take your money or your life is the .38 or shotgun you pick up from between the front seats of your vehicle.
