How Many of You Grow Mint For Brewing Teas?

I grow all my mint in containers.

I have two containers with chocolate mint. My favorite. One with apple mint.

Chocolate.


I just bought three new varieties.

Orange, chewing gum, and pineapple.


I had the pot with the pineapple mint sitting on top of a container and the roots grew through the the holes of the pot into the soil. They are aggressinve.

How many of you grow mint tea? What kind?

I bought 3 starts of chocolate mint and put them in a hanging basket. I will use them to keep the garbage disposal smelling good!
I haven't seen orange or pineapple but they sound delicious!!!

 

I grow spearmint and chocolate mint just to pick and smell. i love to mow them over while I am mowing. They smell awesome, to me. I also pick them and place them in the bee hives to make the bees come in contact with the mint oil they make in hopes of keeping the mite population reduced or gone. I also have penny royal, but I didn't check to see if it is growing this year. I have it growing around the deck to keep insects at bay, but I don't make tea out of them.

 

I grow mint, although I dont really use it. I have Chocolate, Sweet, Orange, Apple, Pineapple and Peppermint

 

I haven't used them in my tea yet, but I am just getting them setup and trimmed good so they grow bushy. They need larger pots now, they are in a 3-4 gallon pot and the roots have grown out. I grow Spearmint, Chocolate Mint, Pepper Mint, Sweet Mint, and Mountain Mint. I really love the smell of them all. Look forward to trimming them each time .

How does the Orange, Chewing Gum, and Pineapple mints smell? Also, how do they taste?

 

Great thread Donm. I don't have mint currectly in my garden, but reading this I now want to grow some! Mint tea is a great idea. My husband also uses mint in one of his summmer recipes. I do think I will need to get me some!
Carolyn--I did not know that mint oil can be helpful in bee hives.

 

I have lots of peppermint... or is it spearmint... growing around the house. My brother used to use some for his Mojitos. I just like to smell them. And aren't they helpful in keeping fleas away?

 

I've read that mint helps to repel flies, fleas, rodents, and ants. I also read that Mountain mint rubbed(maybe a tea spray as well?) on pants can deter chiggers and ticks.

 

I grow lemon balm, a mint relative. Put some out 10 years ago, now it comes up everywhere. I make a cup of tea now and then with the fresh leaves, don't care for it dried tho.

 

I love mint have grown quite a few varieties too --I want to make teas and stuff but I keep forgetting lol

 

I have some but have not used it on a regular basis. I plan on using it more this Spring and Summer.

 

Mine is plain old spearmint, three pots full. At the end of summer I give them a haircut, boil with some water and sugar and make a mint syrup for hot tea.

 

How much water and sugar? I should defo try that

 

No real recipe,, you can do it to taste. You can start with 1 1/2 C. water and 1 C. sugar or add more water if its too sweet. Then just refrigerate and spoon into your tea. If you like more,,add more. I like a pretty strong mint taste so mine may be too strong for some people. Just throw it in till it looks right. LOL
