My melons and cukes did very well on trellises last year. Onion bags made great supports. I like the bra idea, bet it would work well also.
I saw a melon seed for sale the other day that was supposed to get 48# or more...what/where would you find support of that size? wow oh wow!
I am glad you are going for it Cheryl. Please do let us know how it works out. Of course the curious side of me would love to see side by side cantaloupe vines, one grown on a trellis, the other left to meander & see which performs better.....
In this raised bed there are 29 butternut squash. All the vines that grew up the trellis yielded four squash that weighed under two pounds each. ( photo / image / picture from jbest123's Garden )
Were there aubergines too? Those purple fruits hanging from the top of the trellis. If they were aubergines, I wander how they got the plant to grow that tall like wise for the pepper too!!! Or am I seeing things?
Some varieties of peppers and eggplant are perennial for up to 3 Years in tropical or greenhouse climates.
I got them planted yesterday. Probably too many for that area, but I'm not expecting all of them to make it, so I'm prepared to do some thinning. cantaloupes planted ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) And I did stick one outside of the cage to let it grow on the ground for a comparison. I'll have to keep a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't try to get into the blackberries or grow over the strawberries.
They look about right to me. I wouldn`t thin them. I usually plant 4 or 5 seeds at each hole of mine.
I am quite interested to see how this project turns out. I am growing small melons this year and will grow them up a "trellis" of sorts in the tiny greenhouse. I do hope that you will keep us updated on your project.
