    Texas declared it's independence from Mexico and became the Republic of Texas. We lost the battle of the Alamo but won at San Jacinto and stayed an independent Republic for 9 years before becoming the 28th U.S. state in December, 1845.

    Being born and partially raised in Texas by Texas parents I still feel a lot of pride in being born there.
