It's going to take me an age to figure out how to use your site, but I'm really glad I found you!

I garden on an open rooftop, grand in the winter, but steaming in the summer. My garden is also in danger lf washing off the roof in the Spring rains here and blown away in the occasional typhoon. There's nowhere for it to hide! As you may guess, it's a container garden, so being blown away is a major concern when the winds come.

I've had a few miserable failures over the last year of gardening and some spectacular successes.

My tomatoes were great, but peas, sweet peas and dahlias were a disaster. I will post pictures later and hopefully someone can help!

Looking forward to spending time in this great community!

P.S. What is post a poll? For what purpose?

Hi Nadea and a hearty welcome to GardenStew :flower: The site is really easy to use once you know what goes where, but if you have any questions all you need to do is holler :) By the way, a poll is a way to ask a community a question and they can then choose from multiple answers. For example.

Really hope you enjoy it here!

Nadea, welcome from a small farm in central Texas! Believe me, I'm about as computer inept as they come, but this forum is the easiest I've found to post questions, answer queries, start a conversation, and even post jokes! The moderators and Frank help out if you get stuck, and give thoughtful and kind help. You'll love it here!

    Thanks for the welcome, everyone!
It's warming up on this side of the world. Wow! We really are from all over the globe.

I said I was going to upload some images. The first one is of my garden, just a corner of it. The second one is of my poor diseased Dahlia. At the plant shop, I was advised to spray it with a fungicide. It did nothing to help it. What did help is that I whacked the whole thing off and it's growing back again from the main stem. I don't know what will become of it in the heat, but I sure hope it flowers. The tubers were ginormous when I dug up the plant. (I was all set to chuck it out, but when I saw the size of the tubers and how healthy they looked, I decided to replant it.)

If I do anything wrong about posting or post something in the wrong place, please know it's not intentional and let me know how I can fix it. Thanks!

Hi Nadea, I suggest you give this question its own thread in the Plant Pests, Diseases and Weeds forum. That way it will get more targeted visibility :)

Hello and welcome to the GardenStew, from the coastline of Karachi Pakistan! :)

Yes I too have experimented with a container garden on my rooftop. In many ways it the same as normal gardening, but also somewhat different, and so we have to deal with different challenges. I myself am not really found of gardening at ground level, as in my area I can often encounter poisonous snakes. Besides, the soil in my area (because the ocean is so close) somewhat saturated with salt... Which is why I experimented with roof gardening.

Anyway, my advice is to not be disheartened, as once in a while everybody has an undesirable outcome. What really matters is by rooftop gardening, we can somehow restore the balance of nature (in our own small way). As houses in cities are often built on fertile ground. So if we all had green rooftops, then our impact on the environment can be reduced by a lot. Besides, plants get to enjoy full sunlight throughout the day, while at ground level they can't. As either a shadow from a tree or something man-made often starts to encroach...

By the way, I also discovered that birds and honeybees love container gardens on rooftops and balconies. Anyhow I am sure you'll enjoy it a lot over here, as well as make many new friends. We've got people who have even experimented with electroculture (growing plants with mild electricity), as well as people who have experimented with hydroponics! Many members here are experts at identifying plants too, as well as others who have had a lifetime of experience, and so have encountered many of the issues we often run into. :stew1:
