After the deaths of over a 1000 to 1200 people in Karachi city due to a sudden unexpected heatwave - People all over in Pakistan have now all of a sudden become aware, of how important it is to have trees in the urban areas. And this time social media seems to be playing a big part in it also!

And yes, believe it or not, but they are now giving away free fruit trees. For you to plant anywhere you like!!!

    See these links:

So if this takes off, then many areas of Pakistan will instantly become green overnight! :D

I cannot imagine a city without trees. I am excited for you and your city to begin "greening it up". Trees are so plentiful here that our states nickname is "Evergreen State" for all the evergreen trees. Tree seedlings are often one of my main weeds.

Homes are so much cooler with shade trees. The bonus of fruit trees is fantastic. Hopefully having more trees will help change the microclimates and maybe even the macroclimates of your region.

Our neighborhood association is involved with supporting with the purchase of more fruit trees for the local food forest. It is a great way to bring neighbors together for a worthwhile endeavor.

Sounds like a very good initiative, S-H! As Jewell says, every city needs trees. For shade, but also, these days, to filter the air of all those pollutants. Birds of course benefit from more trees, and us people are, according to studies, more relaxed when we are surrounded by trees and green. :stew2:

We sit under the shade of our large Maples when it is really warm out...I like to sit outdoors as much as I can but not in the direct sunlight. It is so much cooler under a nice tree...I am glad they are learning how important trees are...

Some days ago (after realizing what happened in Karachi) they in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, (formally known as the NWFP, north west frontier province) - Announced a "billion tree tsunami" projest! See link:

    http://www.dawn.com/news/1193975

So yes, it seems that something good did come out from recent tragedy in southern Pakistan, where over 1200 people suddenly died due to an unexpected and never before seen heatwave... Which is why now everyone seems to be waking up to the reality, that if trees will one day be gone, then so will we - So best to start doing something about it now, (or else we're all toast)!

Actually, I myself am a bit surprised (in a positive way) to see this project taking off so suddenly and with such momentum!

Very interesting. There was a caption to a photo being circulated - am sure you also would have seen - and the caption was "Save Trees. Trees Save." There is so much meaning in this beautiful thing. The picture was of a boy trying to save himself from drowning by holding on to a lone tree that had survived the flood. Water everywhere, this lone tree and the boy hanging on.
