I have a different plant growing within the pot with my fern. I think it is very pretty, but I am unsure if it is a weed and needs to be removed. It seems that if it is left in the pot, it may take over and that is the reason behind my suspicion that it may be a weed. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Commelina communis (Asiatic Dayflower) Does this look like yours? If so, it is considered by some to be a weed but I leave it to do it's things. It produced a very pretty blue flower in Spring and when the heat of summer sets in it dies off. Then comes back next Spring....it does spread, but I just pull it up when it's where I don't want it.
I have not seen any flowers appear yet, just the vine. It is summer here though, very hot and humid. I will take better pictures and post them tomorrow. Will it take over my fern if I leave it because I do like the way it looks or should I put it in another pot and see what it does?
Hi, It looks to me like a tradescantia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tradescantia ). I checked your link Toni, & that plant looked like a tradescantia too! So I looked up Tradescantia & it is the same plant as Commelina....all in the same family!
Gibasis geniculata (Tahitian Bridalveil) That does look more like it, never heard of that one before but looks pretty in your photos.
Here are a few more pictures of the vine in my fern. Hopefully this will help you help me to decipher what it may be.
TY for the added pics. I'm back to thinking it's a Commelina or Tradescantia fluminensis. If it was just there all along, probably the latter. If it sprouted, it's a Commelina. Adding a pic of the tip of a vine could help. The way the new leaves unfurl is slightly diff. Feeling the leaves is the best clue, but not part of our current technology. Leaning toward the Trad from these last pics. There are both native & non-native Commelinas. Examining a flower can determine species.
