Carolyn, I like and admire your action with the neighborhood youngster. I see that as a way to keep young people busy and feeling useful. If they feel that they're not needed, naturally they will eventually become an annoyance. Good thinking on your part.

Carolyn is a natural born gardener. She makes things grow and thrive, even neighborhood kids.

Starting to really get moving. I planted my snap peas yesterday into their containers. My strawberry tower I transplanted on Sunday are really starting to pop some leaves out and seeds for everything else are started. I'll start more over the next few weeks for friends and family who want to garden as well. Sharing the wealth I call it lol

Well, he came back but wanted money this time... I said that wasn't what we agreed to and I would have to talk to his mom. He wanted to earn money for a skateboard and I hate skateboards ( and some of the young people who use them are not respectful of others property so I wasn't interested in helping to the cause).. he finished the last of the cages and left. *shrug* at least he wasn't bothering anybody else or getting into trouble as far as I know.

Carolyn, I think kids should be paid a bit, if it's agreed on.

High wind in our area today. Two dead trees went down and now are laying across the creek. They will have to be cut apart and dragged out.

Too cold to garden today. But I found seeds on sale for 25cents a package! I bought $14 worth :)

The first day he showed up he said "I don't t want any money... just wanted something to do"...uhh huh. I told him the first day maybe we could work something out like plants for his mom's garden or flowers for her flowerbeds... I guess that wasn't what he was really wanting the first day. One of his first questions was "how much money do you make?"... huh? pretty forward. cheeky little guy.

More nice weather. It was time to do pruning-- Buddleja's, apple, plum trees. I prune on or near the Ides of March--
Historically, it seems appropriate doesn't it.

I am busy transplanting plants and planting out new ones. I also got some really inexpensive crocus bulbs--50 for 1 euro! I could not leave them lying on the shelf for that price. If they bloom, it will be towards the end of april...otherwise next year.
    Here two new blueberry bushes:
    blauw.jpg

At home the broad beans and spinach are coming along well. The spinach I will plant out as soon as they develop the first oval leaf.

We finished digging out and re-soiling the greenhouse. I will let it rest for ~one month and then the toms go in.
    blauw3.jpg

The large grass stand was cut in half and an entire stand of iris's went out. The ground is slowly beginning to dry out, so I will soon be able to work it and do more weeding.

I saw this little group yesterday-- Fritillaria (orange or yellow??)
    bijtje4.jpg

After the last of the soil was removed from the greenhouse, it was dumped on the garden plot and shoved into the empty trench beside it. Soil was taken out of the trench to mix with compost going into the greenhouse.
    blauw2.jpg

Then the plot was re-covered with plant debris-mulch.
    blauw4.jpg

The bees were flying out of all three hives today. There were so many bees flying around at one point...sorry that I didn't manage to get that on the piccy. They were making a sanitation flight and also many were also learning the surroundings of the hive.
    blauw5.jpg

The season is coming along well. At home the spuds are chitting on the windowsill and will go in at the end of the month.

Looks like a great day in the garden Sjoerd. Do you have the dreaded Lily Beetle there? Looks like they are already after your Fritillaria. I have to start very, very early in the season ... if those little buggers aren't controlled very early in the season they quickly get out of control.

Yes Netty, I'm afraid we do. I haven't seen any yet, but those leaf holes do immediately raise my suspicions.
Those Frits did so poorly last year, I thought that they had died. In fact, the ones next to this bulb DID die. My fingers are crossed for this one.

I was cleaning the plot just adjacent to where the Frits are planted when I got the unmistakeable whiff. I had not yet seen the Frits, but I knew right where to look.

I am weird--I actually like that fragrance. It makes my mouth water. The smell is different, but it makes me think of garlic....and I absolutely LURVE garlic.

Carolyn, I see your point clearly. He is cheeky, asking how much you make. That isn't his business.

Sjoerd, I'm trying to wrap my mind around your soil removal from the garden. If I understand, you lift out 2015 soil, place it to one side of compost pile, remove 2014 soil, which has been enriched with compost material, taking it back to 2016 garden. Am I getting it?

Carolyn, maybe he was trying to figure out whether being a gardener to the extent you are would be a good income and a profession he could make a living at? If he shows real interest in growing plants or the business end of the process he could be trying to figure out what he wants to do when he grows up and doesn't know the words to ask the right questions.
