First picking of Asperagus

    Yum! There's enough to freeze one package and enough for dinner tonight! It's one of our favorite vegetables. I'm happy! :)

    That's great! Picking is just about to start here ... I got just 2 spears yesterday. They didn't make it to the house.

    2nd year for mine so picking was limited to one meal. Next year will be better.

    Ours are now 4 years old so we should be able to pick quite a bit. I've read that your suppose to stop picking when the stalks start getting smaller. I don't know if I understand that as some of the stalks a nice and fat but there skinny ones coming up also...all on the same plant.

    What I was told by a more experienced gardener: 'Don't harvest any spears that are smaller than a #2 pencil'. I do that, and I quit harvesting about the middle of July to allow the growth to feed the crowns for the next seasons harvest. It appears to work well, at least for me.
