I was talking to a neighbor today, and she asked how long I could manage to survive on the pantry/freezer/fridge food before I had to go to the grocery store. I got to thinking about it, and if I had a sufficient supply of toilet paper, tissues (it's allergy season!) and cheese, I could go two months easily, and with a little forethought, three months. We have had prolonged power outages, and I've made omelettes and warmed homemade French bread on the wood stove. We have a generator, but save its use for real emergencies.
If you couldn't get to a grocery store for a while, when would you begin to feel the "pinch"?

I have too many opportunities to cheat, living in the city there are many food places that deliver. If you are talking about a disaster where the stores are not open, then we could last a couple of months.

umm, I don't know, but I suspect quite some time if I had to. the neighbor has cows and I have eggs... What more do I really need to survive that is such a short life span? Flour I buy in a 50# bag but I really don't use much for us. We do a lot of fresh vegetables or canned or use what is in the freezer. and potatoes out of the garden.

Like Toni we have lots of shops within a mile of us and we could also order on line. However, with the food we have in the freezer and cupboards we could survive for 4-6 weeks without too many problems.

We had a big snowfall back in 2010,..nothing worth mentioning since,..i managed for four weeks on what was in the box freezer,..i tend to stock up my food cupboards and freezer rather than have to run out,..i must admit i was worried about the Cats and the Dog food,..however they were happy enough to share my food.

I could probably last 6 to 8 months, maybe a bit longer.

I think we could only last a couple of weeks. We don't stock up much. My husband goes shopping every other day or so. Since retiring, he has taken over the cooking (&yes he reorganized my spice cabinet!!) But he has taken to watching cooking shows & is now a great cook so I have forgiven him the spice indescretion. But...we don't keep much in stock nowadays. We would starve in a disaster. We 'd have to head to 2's place, assuming she'd have us. ( I could try to id your iris & I'd try to keep hubbie out of your spices.)

You know we need Barb to weigh in on this thread. I think of her as being the canning queen.

Hi everyone. Cayuga Morning alerted me to this topic. This is not a good time of year for we ate the food all winter, my pantry is about half full. So i quickly counted my veggies and meat and potatoes in jars and in freezer. I probably could eat for a year without going to the store. I keep enough flower of all kinds to probably last almost a year. This years garden will have many tomatoes, onions, and allot of all kinds of peas and beans so maybe this fall my number may be more line a year and half. I have 2 nice generators and allot of fuel. I don't actually go to the store often now except to buy toilet paper. When I go to get it I buy 50 overstuffed rolls and of course, I don't need it very often. That would be my downfall. It wouldn't last a year. I would have to say that would make me run to the store sometime short of a year. Guess I am going to have to stock pile more so I can honestly say a year and half all round.
