Through heat and rain and a case of summer flu, the dang broccoli must be picked, cleaned and frozen!

Sjoerd, that was just the central heads and I put 14 - 2 cup servings in the freezer. Now we wait of the smaller side heads and will put them up as chopped broccoli. I still can't thank you enough for clueing us on enviromesh. Philip, broccoli is expensive here also. That's why I was so impressed when Sjoerd mentioned enviromesh. Last year is the first time of getting broccoli with no worms! Then we got it for our chard and it keeps out the leaf miners. Great stuff!
'Flu is a nasty illness that saps all your strength and makes you feel miserable so I hope it leaves you soon. Broccoli is one of my favourite veggies so I'm pleased to hear that the enviromesh is doing a great job of protecting yours so that you can enjoy it.
I am really glad that you were able to use Enviromesh--it is so helpful. Chapeau for such a wonderful harvest. Why, you must be the talk of the town ! Yippee.
I'm not familiar with Enviromesh, but my garlic spray has kept Cabbage worms off our Kale and Broccoli. I may need it on squash and cucumbers.
looks good. sorry you have been sick though... that is no fun at all and you still have work to do. we spray out cole crops with Bt or aka Dipel. it is a natural bacteria that once the cabbage worms/loopers eat it they stop eating. it is not harmful to pets or people, either.
Baccilus thurengensis = bt. It is toxic to invertebrates but non toxic to vertebrates. I check my cabbages every few days and I squash any eggs.
I feel only slightly guilty as I spray garlic liquid on Kale and Broccoli because I'm depriving the Cabbage moth of sustenance for her babies, but I quickly forget it and keep spraying.
I just heard of garlic spray this year! I ordered some because it claimed to repel mosquitoes...and it works! It says it's safe to use on gardens also but, with the enviromesh, I don't really need it.
I wonder if I should get some of that garlic spray and see if it repels midges. They are the bane of my life at the moment and I'm tired of being bitten and itching for days on end.
Eileen, there are herbs which supposedly keep pests away from the yard. I think one is Mint. 2ofus, we make our own garlic spray.
