These birds have totally altered my entire lifestyle They do sit in old gum trees but then they are harder to see. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kookaburra
When I was in early elementary school I was a Bluebird then a CampFire girl and we sang that song at all our meetings. I was also a Brownie (junior version of the Girl Scouts) and we sang it there too.
Should have remembered that kookaburra song from my own Brownie days also, but when they taught us a song that went.. 'Beep bidily ote and dote 'n do r and do and dat and sshhhh' I was out of there I had long forgotten about the laughing birds when I moved here.
Oh my gosh!! I'd totally forgotten this song from my Girl Guide days (they call them Guides rather than Scouts in Australia...don't know why. Flea Flea, Fly Flea, Fly, Flow Vista Kumalata Kumalata Kumala Vista Oh, no, no, no no navista Eenie meenie decimeenie oohah loohwa lameenie Extra meenie zola meanie oohah loohwa. Beep bidily ote an dote an do rah ah doote n dote n shhhhh' Do you remember Singing Along The Open Road?
FloraPie your photograph reminded me (not of the song) but of a day nearly 45 years ago. When my eldest son, Duncan, was a baby we visited Edinburgh zoo with him. He wasn't in the best of moods and kept crying which was beginning to ruin our day. As we approached the aviaries a kookaburra started to 'laugh' and Duncan suddenly stopped crying, gave a big gulp and then began to giggle (you know how infectious baby laughter can be.) Before long a crowd had gathered and everyone was laughing along with the bird and our son. What a brilliant day it turned out to be. We even made quite a few new friends and all thanks to one little kookaburra doing what kookaburra's do best.
Ronni ~ Oh wow, I hadn't remembered what song it was from but I sang along with your words like it was Brownie camp all over again!! Couldn't understand what the words meant back then and I still can't. I remember asking and getting an answer I didn't like and then arguing about why silly songs were sung when there was moss to pick and leaves and flowers of interest around that we could soak in ink and do lots of interesting things with. I left, and never made it to Girl Guides. Perhaps the message they tried to teach was meta... Life isn't always understandable and if you don't learn to laugh at yourself, someone or something, will do it for you . I looked up the song Singing Along the Open Road but no, I don't remember that one. Eileen ~ What a beautiful story! Thank you.
Flora, I am so glad that you have arrived here...for you bring back some wonderful memories from when I visited your country. I hope that you will be a frequent picture poster on here.
Now the Kookaburra song is going through my head! Used to sing this song in Brownies too. Thanks for the fond memories.
I remember a Kookaburra song from when the kids were small and watched "Barney" the dinosaur. Now I'll probably be singing it all day!
