I prepped Roma tomatoes to go onto the drying screen, picked a basketful of Celebrities and Romas, sorted the ones that were ready to use and ones that needed a day or two on the windowsill, then made a batch of Marinara sauce to freeze. I'm not sure what we are having for dinner, but I do know it won't involve tomatoes!
Congrats ! I lost 95% of my crop. Too much rain and then with 95 degree heat they literally cooked on the vine. Maybe fall will be better.
I'm having a bad tomato year as well. Too much rain and not enough sun. Plants are stunted and yellowing. SO not impressed ... I was hoping to get a lot of tomatoes canned this year.
I'm sorry for y'all, and certainly wouldn't have bragged/boasted about our tomato crop if I'd known you were having problems. Last year we got flooded out in the garden, and by the time I could get in to weed, the tomato plants were overcome by weeds--no tomatoes. It seems it is either feast or famine with some crops.
Tomato's here are late. Granted I got them out a week late, but, none have yet begun to turn. I had hoped to have ripe tomato's by the third week in July.
FBG, our tomatoes went out late also--almost three weeks late. I can't decide if this is Mother Nature's way of telling me I usually plant too early, or if this year's weather just what tomatoes wanted later in the spring/summer, or if we just got lucky. I hope your tomatoes ripen and are lovely, even if they are a trifle late!
I took cuttings and they are well rooted. Now if I can get the garden turned under this week. We may have fall tomatoes ! Cross your fingers ! Tomatoes are always a dependent on weather and luck,, last year and this year both have been bad.
I rooted one sucker, potted it for my neighbor who is unable to do her own these days. The plant had a small tomato already when I gave it to her. Our tomatoes are plentiful and red, but not juicy. I water a lot. Maybe I'm picking them too early ?
Growingpains, it may be the variety. Celebrities are juicy, but I've found that Early Girls aren't. These are mentioned just as an example. If your tomatoes are red, I doubt you are picking too early. Very nice of you to give a tomato plant to your neighbor. Every time she has a lovely home-grown tomato, she will think kindly of you!
Correct, the variety is the likely reason they aren`t juicy. Celebrity are one of the best all around tomatoes.
