Katydid Hunter

    This is the fourth year of having katydid hunters living in my driveway basin. They are a lot of fun to watch, as they are constantly on the hunt for katydid's. This one is putting it's catch to sleep before bringing it back to it's mud nest. They will first lay an egg in a mud tube, then insert the katydid. This will become the food source for the maturing mud dauber.

    The katydid is paralyzed, and now the male dauber has the grueling task of getting it back to the nest.

    I have photos from last year, or the year before showing them flying with it's prey, if anyone is interested.

    Didn't realize these were taken three years ago, so they must have been homesteadin for five years here. I keep saying when fall comes I'll drop a ladder down there, so I can get some pics of their mud nest, and I never do. Need to put it on my bucket list for sure this year.

    Great shot, LI. When you get foto's of the nestr I shall be interested in seeing those. Are they nests like mud daubers?

    Yes they are mud daubers. Not sure what I will find, as many sites say they are ground dwellers.
