    Hi all!

I bought a house last year & the previous occupants had been quite the gardeners. Unfortunately, they had left the house almost a year before I moved in. Over the last year, I have been busy with other things & have just been barely able to keep it from becoming a jungle.

Now I find that I have more time & want to get out & do something with the mess that is my backyard, but I am at a total loss as to where to start. I started looking for online resources & wound up here.

I look forward to learning & growing!

Welcome to the forum! Lots of good gardeners with good advice and suggestions are here, so soon you'll have a great yard.
Having faced two overgrown yards myself, I strongly suggest that you get plants and trees identified. Take good photos of any flowers, leaves, leaves on a stem, and the whole plant if possible. We have a whole discussion area for id'ing plants. After you know what you are working with, it will be easier to get control of your yard.

    Hi dalidaisy
Welcome to GardenStew from southern Ontario!
We love to play 'name that plant' in our plant ID forum!
If you just start by pulling the things that you KNOW are weeds (grass, dandelions, thistles etc) you will be off to a good start! Also aim to do just small sections at a time or it might get overwhelming. Good luck!

Best advice I can offer; Start small. That way you get a feeling of accomplishment. A goal of, 'that square foot of flower bed will be weeded perfectly!', is a great place to start.
