Oh dear, I can appreciate how hard a job that was! I have SO many that need to be split and I dread it!
Thanks @Netty. Yes it was daunting. I have been eyeing that hosta for several years now, intending to move it. So I finally did!! I just got it planted today. It was so big, I had to drag it on the sheet, then roll it into the new hole. Quite a job. RE dividing hostas, I have better luck in the spring as the shoots just start. I just cut a few pie shaped wedges from the parent hosta, not even taking the parent out of the ground.
I'm glad you posted this along with the excellent pictures. I'm sure I'll need to do the same soon and, thanks to you, I'll know how to do it!
That was a big job,..a very big hosta as well,..i can well imagine the state you were in lol,..do you get a lot of slug attacks on your hosta?.
Surprisingly, I don't Philip. I say surprisingly because my gardens seem to be attacked by everything else: Japanese beetles, ticks, deer, rabbits, voles, leaf minors, red spider mites, mildew!! We even have a flock of very smart turkeys bedevilling our community garden of late.
That's very interesting,..something is scoffing your slugs,..doing you a favor,..you sure have more nature visitors than i expected,..though being so close to the woods i should have guessed there would be something coming out of the wood lol,..the Deer,..Rabbits,..including your smart Turkeys would find their way to my table My garden Hedgehogs eat most of the slugs but leave enough to eat my hosta plants,..so i have always to do something to keep them away,..they love hosta leaves and can destroy a whole plant in three days,..if allowed.
WOW!!! That is incredible! We do have slugs here but they don't eat hostas. I am not sure WHAT they eat, come to think of it. I think they just slime around being harmless.
Lol at they just slime around being harmless,..i don't like using Slug Pellets in case the pets or the Hedgehog eat a dead slug,..even spraying Slug Killer,..which i have to do at times,..lots of damp soil helps slugs breed,..copper bands around containers really works for me as the slugs get a wee electrical charge when trying to cross
Hello there, Wrangler. That is a gorgeous specimen. You really have it good there in your garden from the sounds (and looks) of things. BTW---how many different hosta's do you have?
I have a slew Sjoerd! I have two favorites though: Hosta montana 'Aureomarginata', which grows very upright, so you can plant things at is feet, and a teeny tiny one: Hosta 'Feather Boa'. Both are variegated with mixtures of chartreuse in their foliage. That hosta I 'wrangled' is actually a self sown baby. I have lost track of what the parentage is. I have been watching it grow & grow & grow until I realized I had to get it out of there. Do you grow hosta? The photo above is of Feather Boa in a pot on the back stoop. I like the chartreuse & blue combo.
Hello Cayu, Yes, I grow hosta's...but I only have two sorts. I do not grow more because they are heavily attacked by the slugs and snails sadly. The other hosta was in a marked-down box and I do not think it had a name on it...I just sorts took a chance. My small one looks a bit like your feather boa. I do wish that I could grow more, but it is just too moist here...It must be a slug heaven or something. Never mind---I enjoyed looking at yours. I am envious, meid.
